This recessed device mount template is designed for drywall or gypsum walls and ceilings only.

Nope! The Device Mount Smash Plate is optional. It’s primarily used before the drywalling stage, or as a template for device mounts to ensure accurate cutouts when installing multiple units at once. If you're using the Device Mount Smash Plate as a cutout plate for device mounts to be installed in an existing surface, you only need one, as it is reusable. If installing behind drywall or ceiling surfaces, you'll need one Smash Plate for each Device Mount being installed.
